Momentum
Token Honey
Token Honey's latest EP, "Momentum," is a vibrant testament to their knack for blending funk and pop into a delicious musical concoction. Hailing from Manchester, this five-piece ensemble delivers a collection of tracks that exude infectious energy and nostalgic vibes reminiscent of the soundtrack of TV series like "Stranger Things."
From the opening notes of the EP, Token Honey wastes no time in setting the tone with their signature blend of funky basslines, groovy guitar riffs, and catchy melodies. Each track on "Momentum" feels like a journey through a retro-futuristic landscape, where the neon glow of the '80s meets the modern sensibilities of today's pop music.
One of the standout qualities of "Momentum" is its ability to transport listeners to a different era while still feeling fresh and relevant. Tracks like "Way of You" and "Dire Dreaming" are prime examples of this, with their infectious hooks and danceable rhythms that beg to be played on repeat.
The EP's production is also worth noting, as it strikes a perfect balance between polished studio sheen and raw, live energy. Each instrument is given its moment to shine, from the punchy drums to the soulful keys, creating a sonic landscape that is both dynamic and immersive.
But perhaps the most impressive aspect of "Momentum" is its versatility. While the EP undoubtedly has its roots in funk and pop, there are hints of other genres sprinkled throughout, adding depth and complexity to the overall sound. Whether you're in the mood for a laid-back groove or a high-energy dance anthem, Token Honey delivers the goods with style and finesse. “Dire Dreaming” being our favourite track with its dreamy by name, dreamy by nature lightness.
In conclusion, Token Honey's "Momentum" EP is a must-listen for fans of funk, pop, and everything in between. With its infectious melodies, retro vibes, and undeniable charm, it's the perfect soundtrack for both late-night parties and nostalgic road trips. Keep an eye on Token Honey – with "Momentum," they're poised to make a big splash in the music scene.
Apples & Oranges
Soul31
The exceptional Soul31 returns with his new single "Apples & Oranges" The follow up track after the successful “I.K.Y.K” which was played several times on Radio 1 Future Pop with Mollie King. The intro sounds like it’s straight from an 80’s pop tune, with its synth melodies and upbeat tempo, the song effortlessly transports listeners to a sun-kissed, summery atmosphere. It’s got GTA Vice City vibes and we’re all for it. I can see Tommy Vercetti riding that Moped to the club, Hawaiian shirt blowing in the wind, Soul31 on the radio…but this isn’t Miami!
But what sets "Apples and Oranges" apart is its ability to evoke that sense of nostalgia while still feeling current and relevant. I listen to this song and I’m instantly shifted to lazy summers, park visits with friends and family, maybe a little beach trip. The perfect summer song.
The production is polished and vibrant with help of Dean Glover creating an atmosphere that’s both immersive and uplifting. It's the kind of song that instantly puts a smile on your face and makes you want to dance.
The new single "Apples and Oranges" is a testament to Soul31's songwriting prowess and musical versatility showing that he is now a bona-fide Pop artist and has cut ties with his previous genres. He’s made a decision and he’s sticking with it and we think it’s a great choice. With its irresistible hook and feel-good vibes, this single is sure to become a favourite for fans of pop music everywhere.
Anyway… the burning question is “Do you prefer Apples or Oranges, or something different?”
Tape94
Gilly MCR
In an era where hip-hop often feels dominated by the glitz and glamour of modern production techniques, Gilly MCR's latest offering, "Tape 94," is a refreshing throwback to the golden age of the genre. With its nostalgic beats and impeccable flows, this album transports listeners back to the gritty streets of '90s New York, where the essence of hip-hop was born.
From the moment the needle drops on the opening track, "94" it's evident that Gilly MCR is on a mission to pay homage to the pioneers of the genre. The boom-bap drums, soulful samples, and scratchy vinyl crackles set the stage for what's to come—a journey through the raw and unfiltered sounds of old-school hip-hop.
Tracks like "Floaten" and "M23" paint vivid portraits of urban life, with Gilly's lyricism painting a stark picture of struggle, resilience, and the pursuit of dreams. His delivery is smooth yet commanding, effortlessly riding the beats with a laid-back swagger reminiscent of rap legends like Nas and Big L.
One of the album's standout moments is "Eyes" a soul-stirring anthem that sees Gilly tackling introspective themes over a sampled soul loop. His introspection is raw and unfiltered, offering listeners a glimpse into the journey of the struggles of an independent artist whilst showcasing his versatility. Homage to his past and the come up with his friends by his side, Shoutouts to other Manchester peeps like our good friends over at Mic Check Media and everyone’s favourite “Barsman turned running chef” RJ add some flavour to this marinade of music.
Throughout "Tape 94," Gilly MCR is joined by a roster of talented guest artists who each bring their own unique flavour to the table. From the blistering presence of label mate D-Wayne to the grimey and gritty flows of Sleazy F Baby, Berry Blacc & OT Babyface are also welcome additions to the project, each collaboration adds depth and dimension to the album, further cementing its status as a Manchester classic.
However, what truly sets "Tape 94" apart is its authenticity. In an age where hip-hop often feels manufactured and formulaic, Gilly MCR's commitment to staying true to the roots of the genre is both commendable and inspiring. With its old-school beats, thoughtful lyricism, and undeniable passion, "Tape 94" serves as a reminder of why hip-hop captured the hearts and minds of listeners worldwide—and why its legacy continues to endure to this day.
This album is another confirmation that the Manchester Hip Hop scene is up there with the best of them. We’ve said before that Manchester could go "bar for bar" with most cities in the world and compete comfortably and this statement still stands.
When the "Hip Hop Champions league" (an idea that’s just come to me and will no doubt occupy my mind now for a while, patent pending so don’t even think about it) Manchester will be close to emerging as victorious as our footballing counterparts.
There’s no shortage of top spitters in this city with people like the aforementioned RJ, JSD, David Rey, our very own Rowen James and obviously the One6Wave including the man of the moment Gilly, I’d back these guys as our starting line up in the final!
Go and check out Tape 94. Wonderfully produced by Broom Man, engineered by the talented and versatile Ten23, mixing and mastering by Driftbetas. You won’t be disappointed.
By Mr Jones.
Uncut Gems
RJ
Manchester Barsman, Midication member and everyone's favourite runner RJ has just released his latest record Uncut Gems (Masterfully produced by JSD) A 3 track EP which, although short in running time, is packed with quality music and exceptional wordplay. We've come to expect this from RJ. Being fans of his previous work (his track "Bars" being one of my personal favourites) I was happy to find that the new project was about to drop when we had a chat before his performance with Soul31 on the Devlin gig in Manchester a few weeks ago.
The project opens strong. "Take me somewhere" is track number 1 of 3 and my personal favourite. With an almost haunting synth loop you can tell from the start that this track is about to get deep. RJ is a changed man, he's made no secret of his past life on earlier releases, He used to go 235 and end up "£350less" Nowadays it's peace that he's looking for. This track is another confirmation statement of RJ's triumph over his previous demons and his success is attributed to being surrounded by the right people, Morning meds, exercise and a focus on putting out quality music.
"Lone Wolf" is next up and the aggressive, assured delivery that we've come to love from RJ is back. Once again touching on his past life. There's no hook in sight on this one, just 3 minutes of raw, message filled bars. Telling the listener that RJ is happy to be alone. In his own lane, working hard and needing no validation from anyone. Not anymore. He's used to this life. From age 13, in his bedroom, practising his flows and you can tell he's put the work in. There's not many out there who can flow the way RJ does. You could class it as Grimey, and over beats as hard as this one, it works perfectly.
"Quarter to Three" brings the project to a perfect close. The beat comes in with the sampled vocals. Another conscious track that is deep with stories of where RJ is in life. He's happy. He's not ashamed to admit that his actions might have been detrimental to those around him in the past. Now he opens up, embraces his family and he's grateful for those people. He's trying to better himself everyday and with Bae by his side, there's nothing he can't do. The rain won't affect his parade. This track is a celebration of change. No excuses. Just one man who's become a better person and wants to share his story. If you need to hear this.. the bars will resonate with you, if you don't, then just appreciate the art and work that went into making it. Everyone song tells a message and this EP is full of them.

Before I Begin
David REY
Everyone's favourite London born, adopted Mancunian David Rey has dropped his debut EP "Before I Begin" We got early access to check it out before it hit the streaming sites from our friends over at Mic Check Media UK.
Starting out on an emotional note with "Before I Begin" David let's us know that he's here and ready to go with a song that, to us, sounds like a direct aim at an un-named person. Only Rey knows who this is locked in on, but it's a strong start to a good body of work.
"Oh they wanna know where the king is? I dont announce myself no more, Fuck that I kick doors off the hinges" is the opening line from the next track "Mind your business" and trust me when I write this, that line will not leave your head once you've heard it. We listen to a lot of music, but this one just seems to not wanna leave your ears. It was a genius move to make this the first track to drop as it's definitely one of the strongest on the board. Wordplay and delivery are on another level with this one. Production is top class as David Rey comes in aggressively over a hard beat. The secondary ad libs really make this track pop. Nice job.
Feeemo joins the EP for the darker "Farda" as he and David Rey team up to step against the new players coming into the game and let them know they gotta come harder to replace the certified people in this city. Feeemo is certainly certified in Manchester, David Rey is up next. If you wanna come to try and take something from these men, you better bring you A-Game or you're gonna get cut... No barber! A solid addition to the EP which is only improved by the presence of Feeemo.
Rey hits us next with "Order and Chaos" which in my opinion is another stand out track on the project. The beat on this one is haunting and the delivery fits perfectly. I found myself wanting another verse on this one if I'm being picky. It felt like it ended too early for me but it still banged.
"Mystery" is up next. David is in deep storytelling mode on this one. Telling his tale of the come up, the adversity of playing in the big league. He's come so far but he isn't "Minding the Gap" which I took as an nod back to his London roots. Backstabbers, disloyalty and pain have clearly been part of that journey but David is using the pain from these tribulations to fuel the fire. I enjoyed this one. Production, once again is perfect.
"Comfort Zone Freestyle" shows more top tier wordplay and flow. As he addresses the demons from his past. Those who didn't believe in him. He's moving on from that life. He can't stay up in the comfort zone. You can't grow if you do.
Ricko Sauce takes over on the "Interlude" with a very complimentary involvement on the EP but honestly, I spent the whole length of the track waiting for David Rey to jump out and spit us to victory. Unfortunately for me, this doesn't happen. This isn't a bad thing, It was just different.
Abnormal Sleepz joins us for "Love and War" A track aimed at a love interest. The beat on this one is exceptional and Sleepz is a welcome addition to any song and a little auto-tune is a refreshing vibe when used this well.
Another freestyle is next. The "No1 Fan" is Rey's love song. Wordplay is class again on this one. Short and sweet but enjoyable none the less.
"In My Dreams" brings the EP to a close. Another "single worthy" song in my opinion. Old school beat with the laid back vocals in the background make this song super likeable. Rey flows over this effortlessly (like always) and talks a little more about his work ethic and dreams to get to where he wants to be. Distraction from the female attention is not something that David has time for, unless you have the stamina and understanding to keep up with his drive and passion.
All in all. "Before I Begin" is a fantastic listen. Masterfully produced and wonderfully written. David Rey is still moving in the right direction. In today's industry, his style and flow would not be out of place on a bigger stage. Hard working, driven and a nice guy to boot. Mic Check media have backed their man to succeed.. And you should too!
We'll let David off for being from "Daarn Saarff" when he drops music as good as this. David Rey is super active in the Manchester Music scene and constantly performing live. Check out his Instagram @1davidrey and his clique @miccheckmediauk to find out when his next gig is. If you enjoyed this EP, trust me when I say it sounds better live!
David will also be performing at Off The Square on Friday October 28th as part of the "Thirty One" line up. Alongside RJ, Ten23, Conduit and our very own Soul31. Tickets for that are on our events page.

Fool Me
Soul31
Soul31. The man with the golden voice has dropped his latest single "Fool Me" recently. Written, produced, mixed and mastered by Soul31. Is there anything this man can't do? There's a reason that some people call him "The Cheat-code"
For those of you unfamiliar with Soul, his style is exceptionally difficult to pin down. With his unique yet effortless singing voice mixed in with his penchant for rapping some incredible bars, to pigeon hole Soul31 into any box is virtually impossible. Part rapper, Part singer = the whole package. And that's not taking into consideration the fact that he's also been a professional break dancer.
"Fool Me" tells me a story. A tale of betrayal, of deceit, jealousy and paranoid accusations that result in a breakdown of a relationship but as heartbreak stories go... You'll struggle to find one more catchy and upbeat than this.
It's throwback to the 90's with a modern twist. Starting off with a simple yet infectious piano loop over a bassline, the drum roll leads us into what Soul31 is best at, and that is wowing people with his vocal performance. With his deep, dare I say it? Gravelly tone, which manages to be silky smooth at the same time. It's confusing... But I love it.
As the track progresses, the beat gets stronger, with the uplifting synths and Boom Bap style drums but my favourite addition is the high pitched female vocals and old school scratches really bring this journey to life. I'm almost transported back to 2001, but just as I arrive, Soul31 pulls me back with "But nevermind, nevermind" as he launches into his rap verse. With 16 bars of pure cadence, explaining his side of the breakup in a modern Hip Hop story. "You cried Wolf so many times and the Wolf came" could be a relatable quote for many.
As the song draws to a close, we meet back up with the piano loop that plays us home from what's been a fantastic journey.
"Fool Me" has already been a hit around Manchester with support from DJ Roesh at BBC Introducing and Jasper at Unity radio. Live performances at Night & Day cafe with OpenBeat went amazingly well. The sell out gig at The Witchwood with myself (Mr Jones) and Conduit will be remembered for a long time.
Next up for Soul31 is a live show with Origin at Off The Square on April 21st before his well deserved headliner at Joshua Brooks (OpenBeat) on June 25th.
With new songs ready for release, including the cinematic "Lights" which features the incredible RJ from the Midication stable, "Go from here" and many more to come. Soul31 is on the right path.
We thoroughly enjoyed listening to "Fool Me" and you will too!

Vent
Rowen James
Manchester lyricist Rowen James should be called "The postman" because when it comes to hot topics... he always delivers. The North Manchester native has recently released his latest track "Vent". A powerful. topical and hard hitting slaughter of the British economy, The UK music scene and the COVID police state.
There are few rappers around that spit as real as Rowen. His cadence and flow over classic 90's style Boom Bap beats is something to marvel at and his lyrics are on another level. The message is always strong. Every bar is well thought out and direct. Wordplay is off the scale.
Rowen opens up "Vent" by expressing his delusions of the music industry, often overloooked when it comes to the respect he deserves in this game, and admitting he may have lost his way, lost his drive and passion for the music, which is easy to do in these times. either you're rich or you're rubbish seems to be the general mindset of music lovers, something Rowen has addressed on past releases, and he's right. Musicians these days are judged on how many followers they have, before they are judged on their talent.
A simple but catchy hook breaks down the track before the second verse hits and Rowen James breaks into verse 2 with his views on social media. We all want the followers and friends but when it boils down to it, how many people do we actually speak to in real life? "There's really nothing social bout this media, It's just another medium, for mass manipulation" is one of my favourite lines which lays the foundations to his next victim... COVID19.
Rowen is brave by going after "The virus" and the rules and regulations we've all been shackled by. Why did we have to wear a mask to walk around a pub or restaurant but the mask didn't matter when you were sat down? Makes no sense at all. And jeez.. The vaccine rollout? Let's face it, has been a shambles.
I mentioned earlier that it's brave of Rowen to go after the virus. The world is split between The Vaxxers and The Anti-Vaxxers. Those who don't want to be jabbed (and are fully entitled to deny it) are often labelled as conspiracy theorising, tin-foil hat wearing, don't care about saving lives people. That's not the case. Rowen is just sticking by his beliefs and telling us his story. Nobody can deny that there seems to be a lot of profit being made from this situation by the big pharma brands and government employees. It seems to be a real bug bear of Rowen's and he's fully entitled to his opinion (and supported by us at MMG BTW)
There's so much to enjoy on this song. Rowen navigates the waters that most artists are scared to tread in. Masterfully produced by "Homage" with this BoomBap, classic HipHop beat.
Available on Bandcamp to purchase after another musical politically charged boycott of the major streaming platforms (More on this to come in the future) Rowen is taking a stand. Maybe more should follow suit and change the face of the music industry? Chances are that people are still happy to be competing with their counterparts for the title of "Most monthly listeners for peanuts" whilst the owners of Spotify try to buy Premier League clubs with the fruits of your hard work and talent. Just a thought.
Vent is another classic Rowen James track. There's no doubting his writing abililty or his delivery. Consistently delivering brilliant, thoughtful, deep Hip Hop tracks just comes natural to Ro. Pleasing the masses is not something on his agenda. His aim is to educate you, make you think deeper than you might have done before. In a world full of "Roadman" talking about violence, drugs and other bollocks... Rowen is a refreshingly different and articulate artist who, in my opinion was born in the wrong era. If you do anything today... Take a look at Rowen James' new single Vent. and definitely check out his back catalogue. Worm in the Soil and Greatest Trick are overslept on Manchester classics.
Rowen James... I salute you.

Games
Chiko Stokes
North Manchester Rapper Chiko Stokes drops new single "Games" today. We were lucky enough to get early access to listen and review. Recorded at Groundwork recordings. This track, his first release under Mic Check Management, is a soulful, deep, emotional journey of modern love. From our perspective, Chiko, like most of us has been living on the breadline and dreaming of the X5. Looking for answers in love. What type of games are being played? How's it going down? righting his wrong's he's, got to know now... Are you with him or what? These are the words of a man, hurt, confused and in need of clarity. We've all had mixed signals in the past from a potential partner, friend or family member. There's nothing worse that not knowing where you stand. Chiko explores his feelings, letting it be known that together they can burn bright and overcome any barriers but the tumultuous situation that they find themselves in, means they can't work until they commit.
Chiko wants to make amends, to take care of business and be the man he needs to be, but also be a role model to those around him.
Effortlessly gliding over this laid back, simple yet excellent beat (produced by Kenneth English) Chiko tells his story. Using a unique flow which is both kinda old school but yet still manages to sound contemporary. The "Usher-esque" backing vocals really bring this song to life, with Chiko showing that not only can he spit, he can also sing, which nowadays, getting someone as adept at both... is a rarity.
We're all in favour of men opening up and showing a little emotional vulnerability and this song is Chiko's way of telling us that he feels, he hurts, he's human. It's Chill-Hop at it's finest but with a message. Easy to listen to but even easier to enjoy. "Games" is already garnering the right attention. With playlisting on Kiss FM and Unity Radio giving it it's first spin. The new single by Chiko Stokes is a playlist must.
His follow up single "What you mean" featuring Mayze is coming soon. Click the link below to listen on Spotify.
